Interview with Hassan: Moroccan Tour Guide

Q. Why did you become a tour guide?
A. I want to share my beautiful country with visitors. I like to meet people from every corner of the world. I like for people to learn about the culture of my country and to have a good experience here.
Q. What was the process to become a tour guide?
A. You have an interview, have to do homework, and run a marathon (42 km). You need to finish in the top thirty. If you succeed you have a year of school for guiding (in the mountains).
Q. Tell us about a typical day in the life of a tour guide in Morocco
A. There is no typical day. That’s what I like about the job, each day is different.
Q. What do you love most about Morocco?
A. It is a very diverse land; the landscapes, the cultures, and the traditions all vary.
Q. If travelers to Morocco could only experience three things, what should they be?
A. The mountains, the old city (Marrakech), and the desert.
Q. From your point of view, how many days do you need to see the essentials in Morocco?
A. At least one week. This is an absolute minimum.
Q. We had 10 people on our Intrepid Travel tour with you last year, do you prefer large or small groups?
A. Large or small groups, I don’t mind.
Q. Do you have a favorite travel memory from one of your tours?
A. All memories are very dear and unique to me. There is no one specific memory.
Q. What is the most commonly asked question on your tours?
A. How I became a tour guide.
Q. What do you like to do in your spare time?
A. Sports.
Q. Do you have any hidden talents?
A. I play football.
Q. What is your favorite travel destination outside Morocco?
A. Amsterdam
Q. What is tourism like in Morocco at the moment? What are the impacts for you?
A. Not very good. The work is slow. Not like many years ago.
Q. Do you believe Morocco is safe to visit?
I will answer those people when they come here they feel safe, a feeling that you can’t explain but sometimes you feel you are safe in a strange place.
