Omar is one of the drivers who regularly drives our travelers around Morocco. During one of those trips, we asked him some questions, as a short interview.
Can you tell us something about your background?
Previously I worked as a chef for 4 years. And then another 8 years as a chef for a French travel agency. Then I was able to buy a car and since then I have been driving all over Morocco as a driver.
Do you like being a driver?
Yes, I was a chef [during hikes] and I learned a lot about cuisine, I saw nature and met many people. But then life had another route for me, which is being a driver for travelers. I still enjoy meeting people and also nature and now I see more of the country and meet more people.
Have you ever been part of a unique adventure?
Yes, that certainly happens. For example last week; I was driving around some Swiss people and we went to the desert. But because of the rain, lakes had formed in the desert. And we got stuck in the sand. So the travelers had to help get the car out again. They pushed and succeeded, but they were completely covered in sand.
What are your dreams for the future?
I would like to rebuild my house for my family [Omar’s house was damaged in the earthquake of September 8, 2023] and then continue working until I am about 56/57 and then I would like to be with my family. Because I work and travel now, I see them very little and I would just like to be with them all the time. I am working hard now to rebuild the house and save for later.
Is there anything else you would like to say to people considering traveling to Morocco?
Yes, to people who are thinking about coming here, I would like to say that Morocco is a very diverse country, it is a beautiful holiday destination and there is a lot to see.
And to people thinking about coming but still hesitating, I would like to say that they should come and see for themselves what it is like here. There is a lot to see here that you can choose from; the desert, the mountains. So come and experience the country.
